Residents of Chisinau will be questioned about union with Romania

The European Social-Politic Center has announced the launch of sociological studies to measure the proportion of the citizens with the right to vote who have a favorable and, respectively, a less favorable position on the subject of Moldova’s union with Romania. The question will be a closed one, with two possible response variants: “YES” and “NO”.

In a news conference at IPN, the Center’s head Gheorghe Costandachi invited the political parties to become involved in this project by correctly informing their supporters. The first part of the research will be conducted in Chisinau municipality during April 1-14 and will cover the whole population of the municipality. A network of operators will question the citizens by going from door to door. In parallel, starting with April 1, the residents of Chisinau municipality who want will be able to mark their choice using the identity card at tents that will be put up in all the districts of Chisinau and online, through the platform www.decid.md. The preliminary data could be seen in real time.

To inform the people about these initiatives, there will be distributed brochures, broadcast commercials on TV and radio and placed advertising posters at intersections in the city and public transport stations.

To avoid the polarization of the two camps, all the players involved in unilateral discussions on the union theme are invited to discuss based on a neutral platform, where the camp For and the camp Against will be able to state their opinions and arguments in a democratic way. In the second half of April, the research will continue with a series of quantitative and qualitative studies of survey type, this time based on representative samples and focus groups.

Independent expert and doctor of sociology Andrei Dumbraveanu said that by the call made to political parties, to become involved in this exercise, they want to see the maturity and development level of political culture. “We want to see powerful arguments, not imposed arguments. We want to see how some of the people and parties understood the evolution of the social and economic life in the Republic of Moldova during over 25 years of independence and sovereignty,” he stated.

The European Social-Politic Center is a noncommercial, apolitical organization that supports and promotes initiatives to develop and improve the socioeconomic and political situation in the country.
