Report on Public Prosecution says criminal law violations decrease steadily

In 2007, the Public Prosecutor’s Office performed its activity at its normal pace, by applying classic procedures characteristic to the Moldovan prosecution bodies, stated Prosecutor General Valeriu Gurbulea in an activity report of the institution for 2007. Last year, the corps of public prosecutors strengthened their activity, reached progress and cooperation on both local and international levels, identified targets and new methods and features in the work of the prosecution bodies’ system, Valeriu Gurbulea added. According to the report, the level of criminality in the country shows a relatively stable downward trend in the number of criminal offences. Thus, the prosecution bodies registered 24,362 crimes, 1.6 % less than in 2006. Official statistics show a significant increase of the role of public prosecutors in criminal investigations. The prosecutors have performed criminal investigation in 6,918 cases, 2,479 of which were submitted to the court. Moreover, in 44,443 cases prosecutors performed the supervision of criminal investigations. Of these, 10,781 were sent to the court. Parliament’s Deputy Speaker Maria Postoico estimated the efforts made by the public prosecutors as positive, but suggested that they should display more consistency and perseverance when performing their duties and that they should focus on defending human rights.
