The future of bilateral relations and ways of restoring the trust of Moldovan people and of foreign partners in Moldova’s state institutions have been discussed during a meeting of a Moldovan delegation, headed by Prime Minister Maia Sandu, and a delegation of Romanian MEPs representing the Renew Europe group, led by Dacian Cioloș. The meeting took place on the margins of an official visit by Moldova’s Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu to Brussels.

The officials stressed the importance of stepping up partnership relations with the European Union. “We feel there is a lot of receptivity on the part of the European Union and we are grateful for the constant support,” Maia Sandu was quoted by a Government press release as saying.

Maia Sandu thanked Dacian Cioloș for his help offered to Moldova in his capacity as Commissioner, but also as a Romanian political leader. The prime minister stressed that the Government of Moldova has a firm commitment to implementing the European agenda. “The key priorities of the Government are to clean up state institutions, combat corruption, promote professionals with integrity in official positions, stimulate economic growth, reform the Prosecutor General’s Office, reform the judiciary, and ensure media independence and respect for human rights,” said Maia Sandu.

The Romanian MEPs from Renew Europe – Dacian Cioloș, Cristian Ghinea, Dragoș Tudorache, Ramona Strugariu, Nicolae Ștefănuță, and Vlad-Marius Botoș – encouraged the new Government in Chisinau to carry on in the face of all obstacles and pressures, continue the process of cleaning up state institutions, and ensure the conducting of free and fair local elections in the autumn. The Moldovan delegation has been assured of all the support needed for implementing modernization and democratization reforms.
