Relationship between U.S. and Moldova is based on coincidences of geopolitical interests, opinion

The relationship between the United States and the Republic of Moldova is based on coincidences of geopolitical interests, but there is no complete mutual understanding, analyst Corneliu Ciurea stated in the talk “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

According to him, it is a very asymmetric relationship as it takes place between a colossus and a small state. “But it is interesting that this confluence of geopolitical interests persists and is related to the Russian factor and to the fact that we want the Russian troops and munitions to be pullout out of Transnistria and want the state to be reunified,” stated Corneliu Ciurea. As regards the United States’ interest, the analyst said this is to temper and keep under control the Russian factor.

Alexandru Solcan, dean of the Faculty of International Relations, Political and Administrative Sciences of the State University of Moldova, said the U.S. becomes involved in Moldova’s affairs to the extent to which the country needs this. There is the Russian factor that generated a particular behavior on the part of the U.S. The United States is the main donor that offered Moldova about US$1.5 billion in support. “This is a rather impressive sum, but this is probably not the most important thing. The conditionally to which the disbursement of aid is subject, such as doing of reforms, is the most important aspect,” stated the dean.
