Relations with U.S. discussed by Romanian PM Marcel Ciolacu with Donald Trump

Premier Marcel Ciolacu, a candidate for the position of President of Romania, had a telephone conversation with the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. The Romanian official congratulated Trump on behalf of the Romanian people for his victory in the elections and expressed confidence that the strategic relations between Romania and the United States will become stronger, IPN reports.

"I had a very good telephone conversation with the President-elect of the United States of America Donald Trump. I congratulated him on the historic victory and told him that I’m fully committed to the development of our strategic partnership," Marcel Ciolacu posted on Facebook.

"President-elect Donald Trump sent his best wishes to the Romanian people!", noted the Romanian Prime Minister. Marcel Ciolacu also said that he shares "President Trump's pragmatic vision" and that he wants the U.S. to become Romania's main investor and trading partner outside the European Union.

"I told President Trump that we have taken significant steps to respond to his call to increase the military budget to 2.5%. This demonstrates our commitment not only to Romania's defense and security, but also to our transatlantic ties. I’m convinced that, under the Trump administration, the Strategic Partnership with the U.S. will move to a new level so that we can bring great American capital into the Romanian economy, as well as for the modernization of the army and the development of the national arms industry," said Premier Ciolacu.

In a press release, the PSD points out that Marcel Ciolacu, the leader of the Social Democratic Party, is leading noticeably in the race for the Cotroceni Palace and all opinion polls show that he will most likely become the next President of Romania.

The first round of the presidential election in Romania will take place on November 24, and voting for Romanian citizens abroad will take place from Friday to Sunday. As many as 59 polling stations will be established in the Republic of Moldova.
