Referendum may cost state budget up to 65m lei

The constitutional referendum set by the Alliance for European Integration for this spring will cost at least 40 million lei, but the expenses may amount to 60-65 million lei, the chairman of the Central Election Commission Iurie Ciocan said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. In the program “Special Edition” on Publika TV, Iurie Ciocan stated that until now Moldova received financial assistance from abroad for holding elections. The money was used to produce informative videos and other things needed on elections. “But now our partners made it clear that they will not help us. Thus, all the costs will be covered with money from the state budget,” said Iurie Ciocan. Last weekend, the leaders of the AEI said that in order to overcome the political crisis caused by the non-election of the head of state, a referendum will be held to modify the procedure for electing the President of Moldova. Lawmakers of the ruling alliance announced that constitutional experts started work on the bill concerning the organization of the plebiscite. A number of civil society organizations said that Parliament must be dissolved, regardless of the referendum outcome, while the new constitutional provisions must be implemented by a new legislative body.
