After the electoral drive “Doctors against Corruption”, the staff of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) involved in the election campaign Friday presented a new commitment - “Universities against Corruption”, Info-Prim Neo reports. Grigore Belostecinic, the rector of the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova (ASEM), who is a PLDM candidate for member of Parliament, said the action is aimed at engaging the education system in the fight against corruption. “The higher education system in Moldova showed high responsibility in fulfilling its educative function. But there are exponents of disgraceful behavior, whose corrupt practices can no more be tolerated,” Grigore Belostecinic said. He admitted that the ASEM faces corruption-related problems. At least two cases of corruption have been reported lately. Both the teachers and students are to blame for such dishonest behavior, the rector stressed. The lecturers involved in the PLDM's electoral action consider that an important step in eradicating corruption from the education system is to strictly observe the codes of ethics adopted by the universities. They also say that Moldova should join the UN International Anticorruption Academy. Larisa Bugaian, pro-rector of the Technical University of Moldova, said the quality of education can be improved by taking anti-corruption measures as well. Dumitru Condrea, the head of the Student Association of the State University of Moldova, stated the students pledged to conduct an active campaign to discourage the acts of corruption. On July 1 this year, the rectors of nine national universities joined the extraterritorial organization of the PLDM. The Liberal-Democrats started the campaign for the November 28 early legislative elections with the slogan “Moldova without Poverty – Moldova without Corruption”.
