ADEPT aims to facilitate mobility of Moldovan voters abroad

The Moldovans who are abroad can find the list of exact addresses of polling stations established outside the country for the snap parliamentary elections of July 11 on alegeri.md/w/Diaspora. By this instrument, the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT) aims to facilitate the mobility of the voters from the diaspora on the election day so as to avoid possible crowdedness at polling stations in particular localities.

In a news conference at IPN, ADEP program manager Elena Prohnitski said a record number of Moldovan citizens preregistered to vote in the July 11 elections abroad – by 40,000 more than in the presidential elections of 2020. In Portugal, the number of Moldovans who preregistered is by 142% higher than the data for the last presidential elections. In Germany, the figure is by 120% higher, in Spain – by 87%, in Italy by 81%, in France – by 78%.

A number of 150 polling stations intended for the diaspora were established in 36 countries for the snap parliamentary elections of July 11. Compared with the presidential elections of 2020, the number of stations is by 11 higher, including in the localities were the ballots were used up in the presidential runoff. The number of polling stations in Romania (Oradea) and Greece (Athens) was reduced, while the stations in Russia were relocated, being concentrated around Moscow.

On the website alegeri.md, the citizens can see the addresses of the 150 polling stations intended for the diaspora. The information can also be accessed from the mobile phone. To easier find the addresses of polling stations abroad, the citizens can access Google Maps to determine the route to the polling station situated nearby or to other stations located in the vicinity, noted Elena Prohnitski.

The expert said it was a challenge to verify the addresses of polling stations established outside the country. All these were thoroughly examined by the ADEPT team. The information will be updated and data about voter turnout and the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections will be posted on July 11.

ADEPT executive director Igor Boțan said the citizens abroad can preregister throughout the year except for the last 45 days prior to the election day. In the case of the snap parliamentary elections of July 11, 2021, preregistration was possible until May 26 inclusive. The procedure for filing preregistration applications - online or in written form – in 2021 remained unchanged.
