Record gas exports from Romania. Theoretically more is possible, say economists

Romania is exporting a record 5 million cubic meters of gas to Moldova on Thursday, equivalent to 20% of the country's production. These quantities of gas have been contracted in the past, and some of them have been stored in Romania, writes economica.net, cited by IPN.

According to the cited source, Transgaz's data on Thursday showed that the Romanian system was on export, with the largest outflows to Moldova. Thus, an estimated 5.7 million cubic meters of gas entered the country from Bulgaria, at Negru Voda, and 2.3 million cubic meters of gas left the country to Hungary, via Arad-Csanadpalota, and no less than 5 million cubic meters to Moldova, through the Iasi-Ungheni point.

"This is the largest volume of gas exported to Moldova in history. In theory, it can be even more, given that the capacity of the gas pipeline is about 6 million cubic meters per day", notes economica.net.

According to SA Moldovagaz, for the right bank of the Dniester, the necessary quantities of natural gas are ensured for the entire heating season October 2024-March 2025. The basic quantity of gas in the amount of 7 443 773 MWh (about 700.1 million m3) was purchased on the trading platform of LLC "Romanian Commodities Exchange Est".

On the left bank of the Dniester, however, gas deliveries have been suspended since January 1 at the decision of the Russian Gazprom, which claimed it had defaulted on a debt of 709 million dollars, an amount unconfirmed by Chisinau. The Moldovan leadership accused the Kremlin of energy blackmail. In this context, the Energy Ministry said that there are several viable alternatives for the purchase of natural gas by Tiraspoltransgaz.
