The railway workers decided to mount new protests and seek a solution to the problem of salary arrears. On March 14, employees of the Moldova’s Railways (CFM) will protest in front of the Government Building, Parliament Building and Presidential Palace, IPN reports.
According to the Trade Union Federation of Railway Workers of the Republic of Moldova, the approximately 5,000 employees of the CFM are facing serious financial difficulties due to the delay in paying their salaries. The lack of resources also affects the operation of trains and there are also logistical problems and shortages of diesel fuel.
The trade unionists demand that the Government should urgently intervene to avoid the total blockage of the railway system.
Among protesters' demands are the observance of the legislation on the rights of CFM employees, the urgent payment of outstanding salaries and the increase of the minimum pay to 5,500 lei. They also ask for compensation for losses caused by the delay in paying salaries, in accordance with the legal provisions.
If the authorities do not take concrete measures to save the railway sector, the CFM employees warn that they will have to suspend their individual employment contracts, in accordance with the Labor Code.
The protest will start at 10:00 a.m., in front of the Government Building.
On Thursday, the Cabinet appointed a new director at the CFM. The position will be held by Sergiu Cotelnic, who was proposed by trade unionists.
