Putin guarantees life of Ukrainian troops in Kursk if they surrender

Vladimir Putin said the Ukrainian troops in Kursk region must surrender, and Russia will spare their lives and treat them according to international norms and Russian legislation. The statement was made at a meeting of Russia’s Security Council, IPN reports, with reference to the BBC.

The Russian leader said that this position comes as a reply to an appeal made by his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, who urged to show compassion. Putin noted that he treated this request "with understanding" and that the Ukrainian authorities should order the troops in Kursk to lay down their arms and surrender.

The Russian president also said that the new administration in Washington seeks to improve relations with Moscow and that the international situation "is beginning to advance".

The Kursk region was invaded by Ukrainian forces in August last year, and they managed to maintain control over some areas, considering them a bargaining chip in possible peace negotiations. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin said that Russia regained control of the region and that Ukrainian troops remaining there are isolated, with no possibility of receiving external support
