PSRM and PPEM demand not to promulgate Law on Status of Chisinau Municipality

The councilors of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) on the Chisinau Municipal Council, announced that they will make an approach to President Nicolae Timofti not to sign the decree to promulgate the Law on the Status of Chisinau Municipality that was passed by Parliament last week. Also, the MPs of the European People’s Party Moldova (PPEM) Iurie Leanca and Eugen Carpov on June 20 sent a letter to the Head of State by which they ask to reject this law, IPN reports.

Ion Ceban, who heads the Socialist group on the Chisinau Council, told a news conference that the Socialists prepared to challenge the Law on the Status of Chisinau Municipality in the Constitutional Court. The application will be filed in several days. The Socialists discussed with officials of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, who promised to make a monitoring visit to Moldova in June and to try and persuade the authorities to modify this law.

According to a press release of the European People’s Party of Moldova, the MPs of the party consider that the given law violates essential provisions of the Constitution, the principle of local self-government and that of holding the post of local elected official without being limited until the end of term. The bill drafted by the Liberal group was registered in Parliament this March, ignoring the fact that the MPs of the PPEM last October submitted a similar bill, which the parliamentary commissions, experts and civil society described as a good basis for improving the existing legal framework.

Earlier, the MPs of the PPEM also announced their intention to dispute the given law at the Constitutional Court.
