PSRM and civil society discuss solutions to political crisis

The administration of the Party of Socialists of Moldova (PSRM) and representatives of civil society discussed solutions for overcoming the political crisis in a meeting on Thursday. The Socialists reiterated that the procedure for electing the head of state should be resumed and that new presidential elections should be held on February 29, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the party. According to the communiqué, the opinion leaders urged the Socialists to be further open for negotiations with the parliamentary parties so as to reach an agreement and vote in the President in order to prevent the worsening of the crisis. According to them, the constitutional referendum does not have many chances to be successful. Some of the opinion leaders said the election of the head of state is a priority and the referendum is not necessary. Both the leaders of the Socialists and the civil society representatives decided to continue the consultations in order to convince the parliamentary parties to identify a generally acceptable candidate for the presidency. The Socialist leaders, including Igor Dodon, said they are ready to examine and identify a suitable apolitical candidate. The meeting involved Igor Dodon, Valentin Krylov, Veronica Abramchuk, Viorel Melnic, and Zinaida Greceanyi. Civil society was represented by Eugen Revenko, Igor Botan, Arcadie Barbarosie, Anatol Taranu, Oazu Nantoi, Viorel Cibotaru, and Vitalie Andrievski. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the PSRM’s press service said the roundtable meeting was held at the suggestion of civil society.
