The most recent protests mounted in central Chisinau are regarded by some of the journalists as a phenomenon that refers not only to the validation of the election of Andrei Nastase as mayor, but also to the mobilization of a large number of people for a common cause. The issue was developed in the talk show “Politics of Natalia Morari” on TV8 channel, IPN reports.

Journalist Alexandra Batanova said the latest protests focused not only on the invalidation of the election of Andrei Nastase as mayor, but also on messages about the people’s unity. “I’m glad that the people are ultimately not divided according to different criteria and are united,” she stated. The journalist noted the July 1 protest was less intense than the previous one and she does not understand why such actions as civil disobedience are postponed.

As to the future of protests, journalist Dumitru Stoianov said the opposition’s strategy for the medium term is clear and, if the next parliamentary elections take place next March, as it is rumored now, the protesters’ energy will be used up.
 
He drew attention to the fact that the current protests involve fewer young people than the April 2009 protests, but more elderly people. The messages transmitted from the rostrum are thus very important.

Thousands of people took part in the protest mounted by the National Resistance Committee of the people’s movement with the same name in the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau on July 1. The protesters demanded to validate the results of the early local elections held recently in Chisinau, to hold accountable the judges who took the invalidation decisions and to annul the mixed electoral system introduced last year.

The police estimated the July 1 protest involved about 7,000 people, while the organizers said there were 30,000 to 40,000 people at the demonstration.
