Prosecutors challenge sentences in case of explosion at “La Soacra” cafe

The Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office has appealed the decision passed by the Centru Court last December in the case of the gas cylinder explosion at the Chisinau café “La Soacra” of January 2016. The prosecution considers the punishments are too mild, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Prosecutor General’s Office says the court gave too mild sentences to the director of the company that managed the café and to the representative of the Emergencies Division. The prosecutors also believe that the court didn’t correctly assess the actions of the representative of the Chisinau Public Health Center, when it classed these as misconduct in office after initially classing them as abuse of power.

The blast was caused by a gas cylinder that was used inappropriately. It resulted in four deaths and nine persons hurt.

The manager of the café “La Soacra” and the functionary responsible for anti-fire protection were sentenced to six years in jail. The employee of the Public Health Center was put on probation for two years, while the functionary of the Trade Division involved in this case was only fined.
