Promo-LEX: Right to education in Romanian-language schools on left bank is violated

The Russian Federation refuses to pay compensation and ignores the measures needed to ensure the observance of the right to education in Romanian-language schools in the Transnistrian region, says the new communication sent by Promo-LEX to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, IPN reports.

The main findings of the experts include the non-payment by the Russian Federation of €6,000 in compensation to the victims and €50,000 for other costs. "The lack of measures endangers the fundamental rights to education of children in schools teaching in Romanian," said the association's lawyer Vadim Vieru.

"The pressure on schools teaching in Romanian remains high. The application of a discriminatory charge for utilities continues for the eight schools that use the Latin script, compared to those attached to Tiraspol," reads a press release issued by Promo-Lex. In addition, teachers and parents are subjected to intimidation, interrogation and administrative pressure, which force the transfer of students to institutions controlled by the separatist authorities.

In this regard, Promo-LEX proposed establishing an independent monitoring mechanism so that the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe could appoint a team of experts in human rights and education to supervise developments in the Transnistrian region. It also recommends creating a compensation fund to provide due compensation to the victims to whom Russia refuses to pay.

The Russian Federation is insistently asked to provide a detailed action plan and, in the absence of progress, it is proposed to resort to political, diplomatic and economic pressure measures at European level.
