During one year and a half, around 200 representatives of law-enforcement structures - police officers, prosecutors and judges - will be trained as part of a project to fight trafficking in persons. Among the activities are to produce an independent evaluation of 50 selected TiP investigated cases, update the Guidelines on investigation the TiP crime and assist in development of at least two normative documents related to the National Referral Mechanism, IPN reports, quoting a press release.
The project will be implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Moldova with the support of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Moldova.
The main project activities aim at consolidation of the law-enforcement structures working in the counter-trafficking field such as Center for Combatting Trafficking in Persons of the Ministry of Interior, General Prosecutor’s Office and development of the new National Referral Mechanism for Assistance and Protection of Victims.
In the launching event, the Ambassador of the United States in the Republic of Moldova Dereck J. Hogan said that they “are concerned about the decreased number of victims identified over the past year and strongly urge the government to provide the resources and experienced personnel needed to effectively combat human trafficking, including trafficking in the home and in the online environment”.
“We have all gathered today for a good cause – to manifest once again our strong and sincere commitment to fight against this phenomenon” and that “we have to fight the modern slavery with a common front and this project again will help us to consolidate our efforts more and act jointly and firmly,” said the IOM Moldova Chief of Mission Lars Johan Lönnback.
The beneficiaries and project partners of the project are: the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Moldova, namely the Center for Combatting Trafficking in Persons, General Prosecutor´s Office; judges and the National Institute for Justice ; Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection.
The budget of the project “Contributing to a Consolidated Law-Enforcement and Policy Response to Trafficking in Persons in the Republic Of Moldova” is US$ 240 000.
