The Coalition of the Independent Cultural Sector of the Republic of Moldova and Oberliht Association are launching the program of events Alternative Cultural Spaces 2023, which promotes the independent cultural initiatives and organizations in Moldova. The program consists of over 40 cultural activities that will be staged during two consecutive weekends in Chisinau, Durlești and Trușeni and in other localities of Moldova. The agenda was presented in a news conference hosted by IPN.
Diana Munteanu, curator of the Alternative Cultural Spaces 2023 program, said the events will be staged in eight regions taking into account the local context. The program will be opened by a roundtable meeting that will center on the decentralization of cultural life. This will be held at the Railway Terminal in Cahul. A series of exhibitions will be mounted with the support of the Cultural Taxi program. This is the result of artistic residencies of Moldovan artists who travelled to regions through the Cultural Taxi and will present the works produced together with the local community.
The program in Chisinau covers 12 venues, including the Zemstvei House. The locations are mainly noncommercial spaces managed by artists. On June 29, a roundtable meeting will be held on the issue of public-civic partnerships as an alternative to the independent cultural sector. “Thematically, the events will have three directions that are initiated also by the roundtable. These are the relations between the state, culture and market and the interventions in the public space. The last one will be the solidarity with the people of Ukraine and the Ukrainian artists. The program of the day will have different emphases. On the first day, the roundtable meeting will mark the opening. On Friday, emphasis will be placed on all the alternative spaces in Chisinau. On Saturday, the activity will be staged at the Zemstvei House, while on Saturday emphasis will be put on the program from the suburbs” stated Diana Munteanu.
Oberliht president Vladimir Us said the organizers obtained partial support from the Ministry of Culture and this shows that the Ministry is interested in alternatives to the projects submitted systemically by the Union of Plastic Artists or creation unions that during these years benefitted from most of financing through public programs. “We consider the Alternative Cultural Spaces initiative solves the problem of infrastructure that is absolutely necessary for ensuring broader public access to the contemporary art as what we have now in terms of infrastructure is cultural spaces managed mostly by state institutions,” stated Vladimir Us.
Rusanda Curcă, director of the Coalition of the Independent Cultural Sector of the Republic of Moldova, said the Alternative Cultural Spaces 2023 is aimed at making the independent cultural initiatives and organizations in Moldova visible and known. “The project Alternative Cultural Spaces complements the advocacy campaign on public-civic partnerships which pleads for accessible cultural infrastructure for the independent cultural stage and aims to make this stage known because it is ignored by state intuitions and by the managers of public funds for culture,” noted Rusanda Curcă.
The events this year will be staged in Bălți, Cahul, Dubăsari, Gura Galbenei, Hârtop, Naslavcea, Puhăceni and Volintiri during June 22-25 and in Chisinau, Durlești și Trușeni between June 29 and July 2.
The conference was organized within the second edition of the program of events Alternative Cultural Spaces 2023.
