Process of optimizing schools will be reviewed, minister

The process of optimizing the education institutions of the country included hasty and even incorrect acts. Therefore, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research plans to review it based on four groups of indicators, Minister Monica Babuc said in a press beefing after the weekly meeting of the Democratic Party’s leadership, IPN reports.

Monica Babuc stated that 218 schools were closed in Moldova in 2010-2017, while another 303 institutions were reorganized. The preconditions that led to this reform included the low number of students, lack of teachers and the negative demographic forecasts for the communities where the schools were optimized.

The minister noted that the first group of indicators in the assessment will refer to the economic impact of the optimization process. The second and third groups center on the impact on the human factor, especially students and teachers, while the fourth group of indicators will help determine the impact of school closure on the community. The Ministry will complete one assessment stage by February 1, 2018 so as to work out a strategy for enhancing the network of education institutions and a clear view as to how the optimization process should go exists before the new school year.

In another development, Monica Babuc referred to the school curriculum, saying this will be reviewed because it is very complex and significantly burdens the students, affecting their capacity to gain new knowledge. There will also be examined the process of presenting reports by teachers as they spend a lot of time on compiling these.
