Prior registration for presidential elections comes to an end

The prior registration period for Moldovans with the right to vote who are abroad or have the domicile in the Transnistrian region expires on September 16. According to the Central Election Commission, over 52,000 citizens eligible to vote have registered beforehand for the November 1 presidential elections by now, IPN reports.

The largest number of applications were submitted by electors who want to vote in Italy (over 10,000), the UK (about 8,000), the Russian Federation (more than 5,800) and Germany (over 5,000).

According to the CEC, prior registration enables to estimate the number of voters abroad and in the Transnistrian region. Such registration does not imply the removal of the citizens from the electoral register at the place of domicile. If the registered person on the election day is in the country, this could vote at the domicile.

The electoral authority has announced that it drafted the decision on the organization of polling stations abroad for the November 1 presidential elections. This contains over 200 proposals and was transmitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration for being consulted with the authorities of the residence countries so as to agree the establishment of polling places.
