Priests go to people’s homes to announce birth of Jesus Christ

Several days before Christmas, priests go from home to home to announce the birth of Jesus Christ that according to the old calendar is celebrated on January 7. In Chetrosu commune of Anenii Noi district, priest Andrei Pârgaru, of the Church “Great Saint Martyr Dumitru”, said that he started to follow this nice tradition over 20 years ago, IPN reports.

“With the icon of this feast, the Icon of the Mother of God, representatives of the church – singers, the priest and children – go from home to home. We this way pay a visit, see how the people live, invite them to the church, remind them of the feast especially because we are situated in a region, in the Balkans, where we have two feast days. Some celebrate Christmas on December 25, while others celebrate it on January 7. God said that there should always be peace on earth and the people should make peace. We make effort to reconcile everyone,” the priest told IPN.

According to him, many young people in the capital city or in district centers celebrate Christmas on December 25 and then go to villages to celebrate this feast on January 7.

Andrei Pârgaru urged everyone to go to church on feast days and called on children to go caroling as this is a value that should be promoted.

January 6 is the last day of the Nativity Fast. On January 7, the Orthodox Christians who follow the traditional Julian calendar celebrate Christmas.
