Starting with 2025, the prices of cigarettes and tobacco products could increase in the Republic of Moldova following the rise in excise duties on tobacco products, IPN reports.
According to the tax changes that came into force on January 1, 2025, the excise duty per thousand pieces increased from 1,318 lei to 1,450 lei. The same increase applies to all products containing tobacco, but also to products containing tobacco substitutes.
The excise duty for the raw material used in production was also raised. Finely cut tobacco intended for rolling in cigarettes will be taxed at 1,680 lei per kilogram, compared to 1,527 lei last year. The excise duty on tobacco reserves used in heating devices increased to 1,450 lei, as opposed to 1,318 lei in 2024.
The official changes in prices have not yet been announced, but the tax increases suggest that the prices will rise. Thus, tobacco producers, traders and consumers will incur additional expenses.
