President urges enhancement of economy competitiveness

President Vladimir Voronin is concerned about the fact that Moldova will not be able to enforce the provisions of the regulations concerning the introduction of autonomous trade preferences for Moldova, approved by the Council of the European Union on January 21. At a meeting on the implementation of certain national programmes and strategies with PM Vasile Tarlev, a range of Government officials, MPs, and presidential counsellors, Voronin stated that one of the major tasks in the next few years will be to create a competitive economy: the goods produced in the country should be competitive on both the local and the foreign markets as well as correspond to the European standards. Voronin requested special attention for the National programme on ecological agrifood production, stressing the opportunity to create, in several districts, subsidiaries of the Associations of Ecologic Agri-Food Production Producers and Processors. He pointed out the importance of developing a database on the supply and demand of ecological production on the domestic and foreign markets; creation of a model economic unit for producing ecological goods. In the context of the implementation of the “Moldovan Village” National Programme, Vladimir Voronin mentioned the problem of the re-equipment and the creation of new modern enterprises for the processing of agricultural products in rural areas, which would ensure the implementation of the international quality systems. Vladimir Voronin said that the central authorities will continue to support the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry in its efforts to modernise the technical-material base of the centres for agricultural production procurement; create butcheries; improve poultry farming and others.
