The attempts to form a majority in Parliament and subsequently a Government have failed “because of the unconstructive position” of the pro-European bloc ACUM, President Igor Dodon told the Russian news agency TASS. The only way to avoid snap elections is if a solution is found over the next few days to elect Socialist leader Zinaida Greceanîi as Speaker.
According to Igor Dodon, ACUM is to blame for the failure of the negotiations, as the bloc “wanted the power all for itself”, despite having 26 seats in Parliament, compared to the Socialists’ 35. Dodon thinks the failure is due to infighting between ACUM’s co-presidents Maia Sandu and Andrei Năstase.
Igor Dodon went on to add that electing Zinaida Greceanîi as speaker, a solid position that requires a two-thirds vote to be removed, would be a guarantee that his presidential powers are not arbitrarily suspended as it happened before.
The president continues to think that snap elections is an undesirable scenario, considering the “severe economic crisis after ten years of pro-European coalitions”. “These elections will cost the State Budget some 100 million lei, while not being able to significantly change the outcome”, stated Igor Dodon.
