PPR mayoral candidate on where to take money from

Vlad Țurcanu, the Romanian People’s Party (PPR) candidate for Chisinau mayor, says that he will seek foreign funding to supplement the “extremely holey” city coffers if he wins.

Țurcanu told a press conference that EBRD, EIB, the EU, the Government of Sweden and the US Government could be among the lenders.

According to him, many of the previous urgent projects promised during elections have not been brought to completion for “subjective reasons.” He believes the Mayor’s Office and the City Council are reluctant to accept projects that extend beyond a four-year term. One such previous project dealt with municipal waste management: a feasibility study was carried out and the only thing done afterwards was buying some equipment for the Tânțăreni landfill, says Țurcanu.

The PPR candidate plans to treble the municipality’s 200 million lei annual budget by bringing in more transparency in the City Hall’s affairs.

Also on Tuesday, Vlad Țurcanu launched a campaign video that shows how Chisinau fares as compared to Romania’s most important cities. PPR plans to borrow good practices from those cities. On a national level, Țurcanu says PPR aspires to become a political force that Romania could trust.
