Political Party unhappy with draft Education Code

The Social Democratic Party of Moldova (PSD) is unhappy with the draft Education Code. Its leader Dumitru Braghis stated Wednesday that amendments are necessary in terms of remunerating teachers and of the education system as such, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Braghis, the code should provide for giving the graduating students a European-type document to confirm their education to be able to work in some area or another. “Now a high school student aged 19 still depends on his parents and has to finish a faculty to get a profession,” Dumitru Braghis said. He states “some private companies are willing to invest in education as they need specialists.” He gave no details, however. At the same time, the PSD leader says “a quality jump needs to be made concerning the teachers' salaries.” The PSD proposes that the minimum salary in education should be 1,500 lei. According to Braghis, the PDS's proposals do not imply additional allocations from the budget. The MP criticizes the way in which the Government spends the budget money, saying the money allocated to build the Cahul-Giurgiulesti railway could have been taken from companies or investment projects. Another PSD parliamentarian Dumitru Godoroja expressed dissatisfaction with the authorities planning to close a number of schools. “What's going to happen to those 5-6 thousand teachers to lose their jobs?” he asked. Loretta Handrabura, a PSD councilor in the Chisinau Municipal Council, says the universities need to be granted more autonomy. The new Education Code has been drafted following an initiative by President Voronin. The Parliament is to consider it on November 28. According to Education Minister Larisa Savga, the draft contains a series of innovations to conduct to modernizing the Moldovan educational system.
