Police recommend citizens to interrupt fake calls with threats

A day before the runoff presidential election, the police continue to be informed about a large number of calls containing threats. The General Police Inspectorate urges the citizens to interrupt them, regardless of whether they are phone calls or calls on various applications, IPN reports.

A new form of fake attacks has been witnessed in the past few days. Public figures and journalists are threatened with death if they do not vote for a particular candidate. These people receive direct calls or calls through applications in which a robot, through artificial intelligence, reproduces the voice of a public figure.

"We call on the citizens to calm down and we assure them that they are safe. We inform you that this is a form of attack aimed at intimidating the press and public figures by creating pressure and panic," said the GPI. It recommends the people to interrupt the call and report it to the single emergency number 112.

On Friday evening, Prime Minister Dorin Recean also addressed the citizens, assuring that the state institutions will maintain order and protect the population. "These acts of intimidation pursue only one goal – to generate panic and fear so that the people are afraid to go out to vote. Moldova stands up to this. We go out to vote with confidence!", he said, addressing the citizens.
