Police arrest man suspected of forming part of extremist group

A young man who is suspected of forming part of an extremist group was arrested at the Chisinau International Airport, IPN reports.

According to the Border Police Department, when checking the baggage of the young man who arrived by plane from Moscow, the airport police found military equipment with distinctive elements in it.

The man is suspected of being involved in the activities staged by an extremist movement from the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. He will be investigated by the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).

In a communiqué, the PGO says the man aged 26, from Ceadir-Lunga, is suspected of doing mercenary work. He refused to make statements. The prosecutors are to establish if there is a connection between the suspect and the persons arrested at the end of June for preparing measures to destabilize the situation in the country.

At the beginning of August, two young men were put on probation for a five-year period for violating the constitutional order. They were also banned from holding posts that involve the use of firearms for a period of five years. The two admitted their guilt, cooperated with the investigation bodies and revealed the names of accomplices and other relevant details.

In September, two accomplices of theirs were brought to justice. They are accused on five counts, including treason, recruitment of mercenaries, provision of support to foreign secret services for terrorist purposes, intention to create an illegal paramilitary organization, and intention to illegally buy firearms.
