The Government in Warsaw adopted regulations that provide for the temporary suspension of the foreigners’ right to apply for asylum at the border with Belarus for a period of 60 days, IPN reports.
"The regulations provide one of the key tools for border guards to fight illegal migration, an element of hybrid aggression against Poland," Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said in a post on social media.
The order came into force at midnight on March 27 and provides for the temporary suspension of the right to apply for international protection at Poland's state border with the Republic of Belarus, according to the Polish news agency PAP.
Exceptions will be made for minors unaccompanied by adults, pregnant women and people who may need special treatment, especially due to age or health condition. At the same time, the restriction will not apply to people who may suffer serious consequences if they return to the country from which they came to Poland.
The suspension of the right to asylum for foreigners will be valid for 60 days, after which the restriction period can be extended, but not more than for two months.
The regulations result from the asylum law, which the Government adopted in December 2024. The law aims to solve the phenomenon of exploitation of migration by Belarus which, together with the Russian Federation and criminal groups, organizes the transfer of migrants to the European Union.
In March 2025, there was a sharp increase in the number of attempts to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border.
