Poland calls for stronger EU support for Moldova in energy crisis

The Polish presidency of the European Union is calling for increased support and coordination with the authorities in Chisinau in view of the energy crisis caused by the disruption of gas supplies from Russia, a situation that particularly affects the Transnistrian region, writes Free Europe, quoted by IPN.

According to the cited source, the European Commission said on Thursday, January 2, that natural gas supplies are running in a stable regime across the European continent, with the exception of Moldova, AFP reports."The situation is stable, with all member states using a combination of regular winter stocks and imports from third countries, which ensure stable supplies to their consumers", said representatives of the Polish presidency of the European Council, which will officially begin on Friday.

But the situation remains worrying in Moldova, especially in the Transnistrian region, where almost all factories have shut down and supplies of heating and hot water have been halted after natural gas supplies were cut off since January 1.

The de facto authorities in Tiraspol say they have reserves for 10 days in the north of the region and 20 days in the center and south of the region, while the Cuciurgan power plant (MGRES) has announced that it has enough coal reserves to provide electricity for up to 50 days.

At the end of last year, the European Union told Moldova that it "stands ready" to continue its support for its energy sector and urged the Chisinau authorities to speed up the construction of electricity interconnection lines with Romania at a time when there is a risk of crisis. Around half of the electricity for consumption on the right bank is imported from Romania.
