PNL names candidate for Chisinau mayor
The Coordination Council of the National Liberal Party’s (PNL) Chisinau Municipal Organisation proposed Vitalia Pavlicenco as candidate for the office of Chisinau mayor in the 2007 local elections. The party’s chairperson Vitalia Pavlicenco made this statement on Tuesday, March 13.
Pavlicenco mentioned that this decision wasn’t publicised earlier because PNL “hoped that certain negotiations would produce the optimal choice”.
The chair of PNL also stated that the party will participate separately in local elections, but in strong cooperation with the Social Liberal Party (PSL). She also said that the polls would be test and a first stage for a post-electoral merger, which is very likely, in her opinion.
PSL leader Oleg Serebrian announced on Monday that the social-liberals are negotiating with other several parties and, first of all, with the Liberal National Party, in an attempt to merge the parties, if possible, before the local elections.
3 political parties announced their candidacies for the Chisinau mayor office till present. The Liberal Party will field Dorin Chirtoaca, Democrat Party - Vlad Filat, and Social-Democrat Party - Eduard Musuc.
At the same time, the leader of Social Democracy Party, Dumitru Braghis, stated earlier that he could participate in Chisinau elections, and Serafim Urecheanu, chairman of “Moldova Noastra” Alliance said that he admits the possibility of his participation in the elections for mayor, if he would have Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev or President Vladimir Voronin as opponents. According to some unconfirmed information, the Communists Party could field for this office the incumbent mayor Veaceslav Iordan.
