PM Recean to head Moldovan delegation at launch of EU accession negotiations

Prime Minister Dorin Recean will lead the delegation representing the Republic of Moldova at the official launch of accession negotiations with the European Union in Luxembourg. This was announced by Government spokesperson Daniel Vodă.

“Two years after obtaining EU candidate status, the first intergovernmental conference between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union will take place. This is planned for June 25 and sets the start of the accession negotiations”, said Daniel Vodă.

The government delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov, Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi, Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Dumitru Alaiba, Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spînu, and Government Secretary Artur Mija.

“Behind the effort to modernize the country are thousands of people, officials who make everyone’s work lead to our country’s goal: build European Moldova and bring our country closer to the status of a full member of the space of peace and stability, which is represented by the European Union. A Moldova that becomes EU member is of course the only path that the authorities consistently promote because it brings peace, well-being and a better life for everyone”, the Government spokesperson added.

Moldova applied for EU membership in March 2022 and was granted candidate status in June 2022. In April 2023, the European Parliament adopted a resolution requesting the European Commission and the European Council to start accession negotiations, following the completion of nine recommendations laid out by the European Commission. Recently, the ambassadors of the member countries to the EU agreed, in principle, the negotiation frameworks for the official opening of accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine. On June 25, the Belgian Presidency of the European Union will convene the first intergovernmental conferences with Moldova and Ukraine.
