Vlad Filat announced that the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) didn’t give up holding a referendum on the direct election of the head of state, which is by the people’s vote, and will insist on this idea in the future government coalition. As to the future government coalition, the former Premier said the PLDM will form a post-electoral coalition only with the pro-European parties, while an alliance with the Communist Party is excluded. The statements were made in the debate “Why does the electoral behavior of the Coalition count for the country’s European future?” that was staged by IPN News Agency.
The Liberal-Democratic leader said the party he represents is ready for talks and concrete agreements. “I do not want the history of 2010 to repeat as then the options concerning the constitution of the majority coalition were diametrically opposed. I consider that the voters must have clear post-electoral prospects and realize how their votes will be administered after the elections,” stated Vlad Filat.
“We will not form a coalition with the PCRM. We want a pro-European government, but will not take part in the distribution of posts, especially of the post of President of Moldova. Our experience is a sad one and I do want to live it again. It’s a pity that the initiative to hold a referendum on the election day wasn’t accepted as this initiative is perfectly legal.
“This initiative would have provided an answer to a serious problem that can lead to a profound political crisis in 2016. We will return to this situation and will not give up. We will insist that the Constitution be amended by the end of the current President’s tenure so that the supreme law allows for the direct election of the head of state. I see no other way out.”
The leaders of the other two parties of the Pro-European Coalition – the Democratic Party of Moldova and the Liberal Reformist Party – were also invited to the debate “Why does the electoral behavior of the Coalition count for the country’s European future?”
The debate of September 26 is the 33rd of the series of public debates “Development of political culture in public debates”. IPN Agency has conducted these debates the third year with the support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation and in cooperation with Radio Moldova.
