PLDM submits papers to register group starting referendum
The Moldovan Liberal Democratic Party submitted, on Wednesday , March 5, to the Central Electoral Commission, the papers needed to register the initiative group of citizens to start a nation-wide referendum on modifying the Constitution, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué of the party.
Under the law, the CEC has 15 days to register the initiative team, to issue the lists to collect signatures, and to issue relevant ID cards to the group members.
They want to change the Constitution to give back the citizens the right to elect the president directly and to introduce a mixed electoral system, so as 51 MPs should be elected on party lists, and other 50 in territorial constituencies.
The initiative group set up on February 23 by about 1,600 people. The PLDM’s intention is differently commented by leaders of other parties. While the Communists and the Democrats consider it to be a populist electorally-minded action, the Moldova Noastra Alliance believes it’s a good idea, yet unlikely to succeed, because the PLDM did not want to cooperate with other parties in this respect.
