The Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” announced that they will mount a new protest in the Great National Assembly Square on June 7, starting at 12 noon. Representatives of the platform called on the people to come to the central square of Chisinau and state their viewpoints in a peaceful way. They also called upon the Moldovan diaspora to stage similar events in the European capitals, IPN reports.
Journalist Vasile Nastase, a member of the initiative group, told a news conference that the protest set for June 7 is very important because it precedes the local elections. “The Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” invites all the people who want things in Moldova to return to normality by eliminating the oligarchic clans from power by legal and practical ways as these took the state captive,” said the journalist, reading from the platform’s appeal.
Vasile Nastase said a resolution concerning the June 14 local general elections will be adopted in the protest. It will contain recommendations as to whom to vote. There will also be set up a committee for organizing the Great National Assembly of the Truth on August 27.
The members of the platform called on the political parties not to profit from the June 7 protest because it will be a civic, not a political event. They also called upon the rectors of universities to allow the students to take part in the protest and not to threaten them with low grades.
Platform member Valentin Dolganiuc said the protest planned for June 7 is not a whim of the initiative group, but a wish expressed by the Moldovan people. “We decided to stage this event in order to change the state of affairs as we see that nothing changed since May 3,” he said, voicing hope that things will change until August 27.
The May 3 protest mounted by the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” in the Great National Assembly Square involved over 40,000 persons. The people protested against the corrupt government, the large-scale thefts and the transformation of the stolen money into a state debt as well as against the politically controlled media outlets.
