Plahotniuc changed his name illegally, president of Lawyers Union
Vladimir Plahotniuc modified his name in the Romanian identification
papers illegally as such changes are made in the country where the
person was born. The statement was made by the presdient of the Lawyers
Union of Moldova Gheorghe Amihalachioaie.
He said that the Romanian institutions may have committed a mistake
because the legislation of Moldova says the modifications are made in
the national civil registry offices first and then in the documents of
other countries. At the same time, according to Gheorghe Amihalachioaie,
Plahotniuc cannot be held accountable because the law does not envision
penalties in this case. "Things should be clear and the Prosecutor's
Office should examine these case," the president of the Lawyers Union
said.
In reaction, Marian Lupu, Moldova's Acting President and party colleague
of Vlad Plahotniuc, said there are institutions that should pronounce on
the issue and say what is legal and what is not. "There are a lot of
personal opinions, but if we want to build a state of law we must obey
the rules and not play such games that seem provincial to me," Marian
Lupu said, commenting on the statements made by the president of the
Lawyers Union of Moldova
On January 27, the newspaper "Adevarul" ("The Truth" said the richest
Moldovan politician who was elected First Deputy Head of the Parliament
of Moldova changed his name in the Romanian papers from Vladimir
Plahotniuc into Vlad Ulinici, Ulinici being the maiden name of his
mother. The businessman did the same with the names of his wife and
their two children.
Afterward, Vlad Plahotniuc said he modified his name in Romania for the
sake of his son so that he could easier adjust to studies in Bucharest.
He stated the jurists assured him that it was a perfectly legal move.
