PG presents pictures of Iacob Gumenita punching protester

The Prosecutor General's Office (PG) provided new pictures taken on the night of April 7, 2009, which show former municipal police chief Iacob Gumenita punching a protester. Ion Perju, the police officer who was suspended from post on suspicion he murdered protester Valeriu Boboc, also appears in the pictures. The PG called on the protest participants and witnesses to contribute to the investigation of the April 7 events, Info-Prim Neo reports. The pictures were taken by an expert of the Ministry of the Interior on Stefan cel Mare Blvd, in the perimeter of the streets Pushkin and Mitropolit Banulescu-Bodoni, said First Deputy Prosecutor General Andrei Pantea. According to him, the pictures will be attached to the case opened against Iacob Gumenita, who is accused of misuse of power. Andrei Pantea said the pictures show police officers using force against protesters on the night of April 7, 2009, when the police intervened to restore public order. According to Artur Sarcu, prosecutor of the Botanica Prosecutor's Office, the pictures show how some of the protesters are taken away by cars and taxis by the police, while other protesters are maltreated in the Great National Assembly Square. Artur Sarcu said the questioned taxi drivers said a person who looks like Iacob Gumenita coordinated all the actions of the police officers. The police ask the persons who identified themselves in the pictures to call 27-86-40, 069999663 or 069999495. The prosecutors said the pictures were taken from the DVD store of the Ministry of the Interior late in April or early in May. Similar pictures were presented on April 1 by Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca and the chairman of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu. The pictures show Iacob Gumenita hitting a protester and Ion Perju kicking Valeriu Boboc.
