Persons with disabilities represent 6% of Moldova’s population

The recognized persons with disabilities constitute 6% of Moldova’s population with ordinary residence. On January 1, 2023, the number of recognized persons with disabilities was 162,300 and 10,900 of these were children younger than 17. Most of the recognized persons with disabilities were aged between 30 and 45. The men prevailed with 52.8%. The data were provided by the National Bureau of Statistics on the occasion of the International Day of Disabled Persons which is celebrated on December 3, IPN reports.

The persons with accentuated disability represented 56.0%, which is almost each second disabled person, those with moderate disability – 28.0%, while those with severe disability – 16.0%. Compared with 2021, the number of persons with severe and moderate disabilities increased, while of persons with accentuated disability decreased.

Some 64.8% of the disabled persons benefit from disability pension, while 35.2% receive allowances. The recipients of disability pension number over 105,200.

Most of the children with special educational needs are integrated into ordinary schools. In the 2022/23 school year, the educational system included 9,800 students with special educational needs and with disabilities and 9,300 of these attended general educational institutions. The number was by 4.1% higher than in the 2021/22 school year.

The participation of persons with disabilities in the labor market is limited. According to the Labor Force Survey, the working persons with disabilities in 2022 represented 15.9%, as against 45.5% persons without disability. The unemployment rate among disabled persons was 4.6%, as opposed to 3.1% among unemployed persons without disability.
