More than 66% of the respondents of the poll “Perceptions concerning protection of the environment in Moldova” said they are concerned about the state of the environment. This figure is higher than of people concerned about the political developments in the country. The results of the poll were presented by the IMAS director Doru Petrutsi in a news conference at IPN.
Asked if they are satisfied or dissatisfied with the way the authorities deal with the environment-related problems, almost half of the respondents said they are dissatisfied, over 20% said they are very dissatisfied, while 24% said they are satisfied.
Some 25% of the respondents said that namely the people are those who do the most to protect the environment. At the same time, 15% of the respondents approve of the Government’s steps in this respect. Almost 60% of the respondents consider they sufficiently become involved in environment protection activities. However, only about 15% of the respondents consider that the largest part of the people take care of the environment. Over 75% said most of the people do not take care of the environment because they are ignorant or indifferent.
75% of those polled said that during the last 12 months they planted trees at least once, while over 50% said they took part in voluntary cleanup activities.
In the same news conference, acting Deputy Minister of the Environment Dorin Dusciac said he is surprised at the data showing that individually most of the respondents are concerned about the state of the environment and declare that they become involved in protection activities, but collectively most of the people are indifferent and ignorant.
He considers that if the information that the people planted trees for several times during the last 12 months was true, we would have more forests in the country.
IMAS carried out five polls on the issue between November and December 2014. They each covered over 800 persons from more than 90 settlements. The margin of sampling error is 3.4%. The polls were commissioned by the Association for Development and Cooperation in Moldova.
