PDM suggests holding referendum simultaneously with parliamentary elections

The Democratic Party (PDM) proposes holding a referendum concomitantly with the parliamentary elections set for February 24, 2019. In the plebiscite, the people will pronounce on the proposal to reduce the number of MPs from 101 to 61 and also on the possibility of withdrawing the seat of MP by the voters when they are not satisfied with the MPs’ work. The leader of the PDM Vlad Plahotniuc made the announcement in a press briefing held after the weekly meeting of the party, IPN reports.

“We think an optimized, well-structured and organized Parliament will become more efficient. The MPs will be more responsible and their work could be supervised more efficiently by society,” stated Vlad Plahotniuc.

The politician said the party so far hasn’t suggested holding a referendum on these issues first of all in order to avoid the spending of public funds and because the turnout at referendums is very low.

“Now that the parliamentary elections will take place on February 24, 2019, an opportune moment appears for holding such a referendum simultaneously with the elections, without spending extra public funds and certainly being sure of a high voter turnout as the attendance at the legislative elections is usually high,” stated Vlad Plahotniuc, adding the PDM will draft a legislative initiative for holding the plebiscite together with the upcoming elections.

Vlad Plahotniuc also said that the pensioners whose incomes are lower than the minimum substance level as of January 1, 2019 will receive pensions that will by 10% higher in addition to the annual indexation. Also, the Government was requested to make sure similar raises in salaries and pensions are seen at least once a year.
