PCRM petitions Constitutional Court again over ban on hammer and sickle

The Communist Party's (PCRM) parliamentary group has sent another petition to the Constitutional Court requesting it to consider without delay its appeal against the ban on communist symbols. In their petition, the Communists reiterated their position that the ban runs against the Moldovan Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights. The party complains that the law introducing the ban, and which took effect on October 1, has been cited by local electoral authorities when refusing the registration of Communist candidates running under the hammer-and-sickle symbol in snap elections. “This flagrantly violates the fundamental human rights and freedoms provided by all domestic and international documents, including the right to freedom of expression, the right to be elected, equality before the law, political pluralism and equality of all political parties”, the PCRM said in a statement. According to procedure, the Communists' request is to be heard at the nearest Constitutional Court meeting, most likely on October 23. The appeal was submitted on September 18 and the Constitutional Court has 6 months to pronounce a decision on it.
