A team of specialists of the Emergency Medicine Institute of Chisinau performed a successful operation to save a 57-year-old patient, who had a giant meningioma. After five years of severe pain and progressive loss of vision in her right eye, the woman was successfully operated on through a multidisciplinary method and is now in the recovery period, IPN reports.
Diagnosed with a giant meningioma in the right sphenoid wing, which is a part of the sphenoid bone located at the base of the skull, behind the eyes, the patient underwent treatment in two stages, at an interval of four days.
The first stage consisted of the devascularization of the tumor by closing the endovascular vessel that supplied it, thus preventing the risk of massive hemorrhage. At the second stage, the tumor was completely removed with the help of advanced techniques - neurosurgical microscope and neuronavigation.
Meningioma is a tumor that develops from the meninges and, although most cases are benign, they can affect the functions of the nervous system, depending on the location.
The cost of the treatment - over 429,000 lei - was fully covered by the National Health Insurance Company.
The doctors also reported that the patient's recovery went without complications and she was discharged seven days after the operation. The surgery was performed in the new operating block of the Emergency Medicine Institute, equipped with 15 modern surgery rooms, which was inaugurated at the beginning of this year.
