Parliament rejects candidature of Serafim Urecheanu as member of Moldovan delegation to PACE
Majority of MP rejected at Thursday’s sitting November 16 the proposal to designate leader of “Moldova Noastra” Alliance (AMN) Serafim Urecheanu as member of Moldova’s parliamentary delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Urecheanu had to replace MP Anatol Taranu, who was recently excluded from AMN faction. The candidature of the leader of “Moldova Noastra” Alliance was voted only by 13 MPs.
AMN MP Veaceslav Untila qualified this vote as “a trick” that will not lead to finding a political consensus in the Parliament, but to unforeseeable actions.
His faction colleague Leonid Bujor stated that, rejecting for the second time the candidature of Urecheanu as member of delegation to PACE, MPs shows lack of respect. According to Bujor, AMN faction reserves its right to inform all the international organizations about the “disdain that is happening in the Moldovan Parliament”.
MP Ion Gutu sought for an explanation from the communist faction regarding the reasons for this vote, while communist MP Dumitru Prijmireanu replied that it is about the faction’s and each MP’s right to vote “as they consider”.
Serafim Urecheanu thanked in turn the communist MPs for this vote that, in his opinion, is “a highly appreciation of his personality”. “This vote shows the government’s fear and the fact that AMN is a real power”, he added. According to his words, President Vladimir Voronin himself declared that Urecheanu will not stand at the European tribune.
At the same sitting, the Parliament approved another draft by which the former AMN MP Vitalia Pavlicenco was replaced by Veaceslav Untila in Moldova’s delegation to PA of NATO.
On 27 July 2006, PACE President Rene van der Linden has said in his speech delivered from the central tribune of the Parliament of Chisinau that the process and the democratic institutions in Moldova still need important reforms. “It is necessary the legislation proves that the MPs have the required immunity to carry out their tasks”, European official stressed. Van der Linden referred to the situation of AMN leader Serafim Urecheanu, “whose case has affected the composition of Moldovan delegation to PACE” and who should not be vulnerable in contrast to the parliamentary majority.
