Parliament appoints new Prosecutor General

Parliament approved Valeriu Gurbulea to the office of Prosecutor General of Moldova on Thursday, February 8. Previously he was the prime-deputy Prosecutor General. Gurbulea was appointed to this office after Parliament accepted the resignation of Valeriu Balan, who is now serving as presidential advisor with special missions and for foreign assistance coordination. Several opposition MPs criticised Gurbulea. Anatol Taranu stated that Gurbulea has the reputation of a person that represents some interest groups. Serafim Urecheanu said that he has proofs that Gurbulea personally contributed to the release of Alexandru Sinegur who is suspected of several murders. Anatol Onceanu termed Gurbulea “a malicious person”, as he is responsible for the political proceedings against the opposition. Several MPs asked him about the accusations of the former officer Grigore Gorea, who claimed that Gurbulea started proceedings at someone’s political orders. Gurbulea rejected the allegations, saying this are “subjective opinions resulted from certain interests”. The specific character of the prosecution activity is that always one of the parties involved in a dispute is dissatisfied, Gurbulea said. Chair of the Legal Committee for Appointments and Immunities Vladimir Turcan said that Gurbulea is a well-prepared and responsible specialist. 68 Communist, Democrat and Christian-Democrat MPs backed Gurbulea’s candidature. Valeriu Gurbulea was born on November 22, 1965, in Glinjeni village, Falesti raion. He started his activity in the prosecution bodies in 1991. In 2001-2004 he served as secretary of the Supreme Security Council and since February 2004 held the office of prime-deputy Prosecutor General.
