Parliament adopts national radioactive waste management strategy

The Moldovan authorities aim to ensure European management of radioactive waste by 2026. For the purpose, Parliament on April 13 carried a national strategy and a plan of action for implementing it in the first reading, IPN reports.

The informative note to the bill says radioactive waste stockpiled in the underground storehouses of the special destination enterprise “Special objects 5101 and 5102” does not ensure the appropriate radiological protection of the population and environment. Near Bubuieci commune, measures should be taken immediately to stop the migration of toxic substances from the underground storehouses and to remedy the situation there.

A sum of 36.7 million lei is needed to adjust the radioactive waste management infrastructure. In Moldova there are over 6,000 radioactive sources exploited by almost 200 business entities that are potential generators of radioactive waste.
