More than 6,800 people benefited from cardiovascular surgeries last year, funded by the mandatory health insurance system. Over 4,900 of these were minimally invasive procedures for treating myocardial infarction in adults, 81 involved correcting congenital heart defects, and nearly 1,850 were other types of cardiac surgeries, IPN reports.
The National Health Insurance Company allocated over 417 million lei for these services.
The cost of a procedure varies depending on its complexity, starting at approximately 54,000 lei for minimally invasive surgeries in adults and reaching up to 83,000 lei for cardiac surgeries.
One of the most expensive procedures, aortic valve replacement using a minimally invasive method, is covered by public funds, with the cost of a single case exceeding 550,000 lei.
In 2024, the number of procedures financed under the "Electrophysiological Study and Ablations" program, aimed at treating heart rhythm disorders, increased significantly, reaching 504 cases - 263 more than in 2023. Around 17 million lei were allocated for these services, covering the cost of necessary medical supplies.
Cardiovascular procedures are free for insured individuals, whether performed as emergency interventions or scheduled operations. For planned surgeries, patients must consult their family doctor or specialist, who will issue a referral and ensure the necessary medical examinations are conducted.
In 2025, such procedures will be performed in six medical institutions, three of which are public and three private, all contracted by the National Health Insurance Company.
