Over 230 police officers investigated for corruption in 2020

A number of 156 police officers last year were investigated in 104 criminal cases managed by the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office. The National Anticorruption Center last year handled 55 criminal cases started against 80 employees of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In a response to an inquiry made by IPN, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said that 11 of the 104 criminal cases managed by the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office were sent to court and 15 police officers were accused of such offenses as passive corruption, active corruption an influence peddling. Thirty-six cases involving 83 employees of the Ministry of Home Affairs were dropped in accordance with the Penal Procedure Code for the reason that the deed didn’t have components of an offense. Two criminal cases against two employees of the Ministry were suspended, while 21 criminal cases were connected to other criminal cases and sent to the responsible bodies.

Of the 55 criminal cases managed by the National Anticorruption Center, 17 were sent to court. In these, 20 employees of the Ministry of Home Affairs were accused of passive corruption, active corruption, influence peddling, swindle and appropriation. Another 19 criminal cases against employees of the Ministry of Home Affairs were dropped. Four criminal cases were connected to other cases and eight cases were referred to the competent bodies. The others were overdue at the end of 2020.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office noted that it cannot provide details about the posts of the Ministry’s employees who were featured in the cases as the records are not kept according to the posts held by the accused persons.
