Human rights and equality are promoted in a series of interactive activities organized in Chisinau. State institutions and non-governmental organizations presented programmes and projects for the protection of fundamental rights at the first edition of the Festival of Human Rights and Equality, organized by the People's Advocate's Office, IPN reports.
Visitors had the opportunity to explore information stands, where Moldovan organizations and international partners presented their programs and initiatives to defend fundamental rights. Each participant had the opportunity to receive brochures and useful information on how to know and protect their rights.
In parallel, Telefilm Chisinau screened two documentaries: "My home's backyard" and "I will live". The first film, directed by Ana Gurdis, tells the story of a woman, a victim of domestic violence, who ended up killing her husband in an attempt to defend herself after a long period of constant aggression against her and her children.
"It's a true story about a strong woman who went through many hardships and asked for help, but didn't get it in time. This movie is a lesson about life, about the courage to fight," said director Ana Gurdiș.
The second movie, "I will live", tells the story of a woman, Aliona, diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, who faces the disease with optimism. "This is a movie about hope and courage, about how we can face life's hardships with dignity", said Liliana Marii, the film's director.
The screenings were followed by interactive discussion sessions, where the audience had the opportunity to talk directly with the authors of the films, delving deeper into the topics covered.
Another highlight of the festival was the interactive quiz, - an educational competition that tested participants' knowledge of human rights. Teams made up of students, academics and volunteers from international organizations came. "We learned many new things and the atmosphere was friendly. It's a good way to learn about our rights and the importance of protecting them", said one of the contest participants.
"Human rights are fundamental to ensuring a just and democratic society. In a world marked by conflict and rapid change, it is essential for every citizen to know and protect these rights", shared the People's Advocate Ceslav Panico.
"In 2024, we found that many of the international standards adopted by the UN in 2009 are not yet implemented at national level. This needs to change to ensure better protection of children", says People's Advocate for Children's Rights Vasile Coroi.
"Through this event, we want to stimulate an open dialog and find innovative solutions for the protection of fundamental rights at a time when society is facing multiple challenges. Together we can build a more just, respectful and inclusive Moldova for every person", concluded Ceslav Panico.
The Festival of Human Rights and Equality was an educational and awareness-raising event, which brought to the forefront the importance of knowing fundamental human rights and involving citizens in their protection. The event is part of the series of activities organized annually by the Office of the People's Advocate and the Council for Equality, with the support of international partners, the UN and the Council of Europe.
