The labels of only one third of the frozen fish products or seafood provide correct information about the content of ice. Most of the irregularities were identified in the sale of frozen seafood and fish fillet, shows the report of an inspection carried out by the National Food Safety Agency (NFSA) in September, IPN reports.
If the ice content is less than 5% of the total weight of the frozen fish, this fact is not indicated on label. If it is higher than 5%, it should be mandatorily indicated in percentage. Checks showed only 33% of the 60 taken samples complied with the reference criteria for indicating correct information on the label, said the Agency.
In the case of the other 40 noncompliant samples, the product was marked improperly or there was no information about the ice content in percentage, etc.
To remedy the ascertained irregularities, the Agency’s inspectors will continue checking the importing companies and those that prepack fish and fish food. If the irregularities are not dealt with, contravention reports will be drawn up and fines will be imposed.
