One third of Moldovan scientists are young
88 organizations from Moldova performed in 2005 research works, including 61 institutions of scientific research, 12 construction works designing bureaus, 4 drafting and exploration organizations, 11 higher education institutions.
According to the information of the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2005, research activities were performed by 6.7 thousand persons or 35.4 persons per 10 000 inhabitants involved in the national economy. The number of employers involved in research activities remained the same but the number of teaching staff performing scientific activities together with educational activities increased by 5.6% compared with 2004 and the number of persons performing research activity as basic work reduced by 2.6% compared with 2004.
The personnel with higher education involved in this type of activity constituted 5243 persons (78.5%), with scientific degrees 2345 persons (35.1%). The age groups look as follows: 15.5% are under 30 year-old, 15.5% - 30-39 year-old, 23.6% - 40-49 year-old, 27.8% - 50-59 year-old, 17.2% are over 60 year-old.
One third of them worked in the field of natural sciences, one fifth – in the technical field. Out of the total number of researchers 43.4% are women.
The total volume of scientific researches performed in 2005 amounted to MDL 207.4 mil. (increasing by 16.4% compared with 2004, and volume of expenses – MDL 150.1 mil. The expenses were distributed as follows: technical sciences – 34.9%, agricultural – 25.4%, natural -23.3%, medical – 10.2%, humanitarian – 3,9%, social – 2.3%. If taking into consideration the financing source the most significant were the budgetary sources (58.2% of the total expenses), being followed by the sources of the beneficiaries – 23.5%. At the same time budgetary sources increased almost twice compared with 2003.
